Koh Phangan Island is a food-lover's paradise. As the island is still something of a secret, the food is not only top notch, but ultra-traditional as well. Most visitors eat at their bungalows, where the food is inexpensive and emphasises fresh seafood. [more]

The dedicated food enthusiast will find many places down different streets that will delight the eye and please the palate. Sample the restaurants mentioned here, but don't forget to do a little exploring on your own. The best meal is often the one you didn't plan on.

Recommended Restaurants

We like eating in a place with reasonable prices and friendly service, though we will splurge occasionally on a restaurant with superb food or a breathtaking view.

The Rock

This high-end restaurant is run by Paradise Bnglaows, and dishes out stellar beach views along with its seafood. Try the garlic bread or a salad-they're popular with the locals. The cocktails are grand, and the wine quality is better than anywhere else. This is definitely the place to go if you want a break from the pounding music elsewhere on the strip.

Lobster Seafood

The pirces are a but high, but if you are looking for the best mussels on the island, this is very possibly the place to find them. Try the ones in curry paste while you soak in the magnificent view. Lobster Seafood is the only restaurant with a terrace right up the beach, which definitely makes up for the high price.

Shell

Shell is located by the side of Had Rin 'lake' (which is actually more of a swamp than lake). This is the place to get the best Italian cuisine on the island-or so the locals will tell you. We tend to agree. The comprehensive menu includes a wide range of pizza and pasta favourites, as well as decadent desserts and great coffee. Open 12pm - 2pm and 6pm - 2am.

Restaurants Recommended for Business

All of the restaurants in the "recommended section can also double as ideal business dinner spots. Here are a few more places you may consider taking your new Thai associates:

Om Ganesh

We generally recommend more expensive restaurants with luxurious surroundings for business meals, but this Indian restaurant serves food so fine you won't mind the simple interior.

Fans of north Indian cuisine won't be disappointed by the menu. Your new associates will be impressed by your sophisticated palate. A full range of curries, dhals and tandoori dishes are offered at incredibly cheap prices. The large Thali set meals are particularly good value. Main road, Had Rin, Open 11am - 2am.

Restaurants Recommended for those on a Budget

For those who like to find places to eat without locking themselves into a specific restaurant, Thong Sala is chock full of budget options-look near the pier where the ferries disembark.

Nira's Bakery

This is a Koh Phangan mainstay renowned for its long hours of operation. It is also very easy to find, as it is right in Had Rin's busiest intersection. Nira's is a great place to see and be seen - you can get there for breakfast and spend your time figuring out who's just starting the day and who's finishing the night.

This is a Thai bakery, which serves pies, pastries, sandwiches and cakes. Had Rin Crossroads. Open 24 hours.

Recommended Trendy Restaurants

Koh Phangan has many places where you can see and be seen. Here are a few of them:

Lucky Crab

This is the original seafood place in Hat Rin, and it is full of very 'un-lucky' crabs very deliciously prepared. This place is wildly popular, so be prepared to wait a long time for your very good food. The salads and soups are even better than the crabs, if such a thing is possible.

Sheesha

On the north coast, this little restaurant caters to the current tobacco craze gripping Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, as you can tell by the name. Food and cocktails are served, but the restaurant is mostly about smoking Sheesha. Chao Lok Lum, T077-374161

Hiatus

This is a cozy little restaurant that serves Thai and European food in exotic surroundings.

Be warned: you will be eating in a reclining position on triangle cushions around the tables-make sure your outfit is up to this.
