Transportation in Koh Phangan

Those traveling to Koh Phangan may be interested to know about the basic transportation options available, which are quite different from most other countries. First, to get onto the island, most people opt to fly. The closest airport is on Koh Samui (a sister island to Koh Phangan). Flights often shoot from Bangkok daily. From the airport, it is only a short boat ride over to the island, which is one of the more popular methods of transportation in Koh Phangan.

Once on the island of Koh Phangan, a Jeep or motorbike is the best option for transportation in Koh Phangan. Jeeps and motorbikes are rented by local retailers (many found within the city) for as long as you need for transportation in Koh Phangan. Prices tend to run between 100 baht per day to 1,000 baht per day depending on vehicle type and motor size. Foreigners are often asked to leave their passport with the retailer as a security deposit when renting transportation in Koh Phangan. While you don't need a driver's license to rent a motorbike or Jeep, you should have good driving skills before attempting to maneuver the tough terrain and challenging roads (and road conditions) that make up most of the island as you search for the right method of transportation in Koh Phangan.

Transportation in Koh Phangan is often difficult by motorbike because the ever turning, hilly and rough terrain can put up a fight. It is easy to crash, especially at night, so it is advisable that you be careful, avoid night driving and stay well under the speed limit signs posted.

While motorbikes are the most popular form of tourist transportation in Koh Phangan, there are a few other options you may want to look into. Sonthaews and boats are used quite frequently for transportation in Koh Phangan. Sonthaews are truck taxis that will give you a ride for around 50 baht per ride (more for longer trips) should you choose to use them for transportation in Koh Phangan. Boats are used for visitor tours and for traveling to villages as a method of transportation in Koh Phangan. Boats can be rented for between 500 baht and 1000 baht per day.

Transportation in Koh Phangan can be done a number of different ways; it all comes down to personal preference and price.
