The Full Moon Party on Phangan Island started as a small gathering of a few backpacking enthusiasts in the late 1980s. They gathered on the beach to dance and drink all night long during the full moon. Today, the Full Moon Party on Phangan Island is one of the biggest parties in Thailand. During the Full Moon Party on Phangan Island, the energetic crowd starts partying as the sun goes down and keeps on going until the sun appears the next day. There are entertainers, fireworks, and makeshift bars on the beach that serve a variety of drinks. The small island of Koh Phangan has about 12,000 residents, but there can be as many as 10,000 people attending the Full Moon Party on Phangan Island.
